Orthopaedics and traumatology is a medical speciality that mainly covers extremities, bones, joints, soft tissues (e.g., muscles, ligaments, discs) and related problems.

Treatment is mainly divided into non-operative (including medication and physiotherapy) and operative (open surgery and minimally invasive surgery). Doctors will depend on patients’ conditions to offer the best treatment for them and help them recover sooner.

The following are common orthopedic diseases:

Herniated Disk

Intervertebral disc is part of the spine. It is the soft tissue that connects the vertebral bodies in the spine to protect the spinal nerves. It is mainly divided into two parts; the inner layer is a gel-like nucleus pulposus, which is used for shock absorption, and the outer layer is a fibrous ring, which provides tensile strength.

Herniated disk, which can happen in any part of the spine, such as cervical, thoracic, lumbar, etc. Some patients can have a herniated disk without symptoms. However, if the disc herniation constitutes a problem, the symptoms cannot be ignored.

Frozen Shoulder/Adhesive Capsulitis

When the shoulder capsule becomes inflamed, thickened, and loses elasticity, it can make the shoulder joint painful and stiff. It can be caused by trauma or surgery, and it is also associated with diabetes and heart disease, but it can also be primary without specific reason.

Tennis Elbow (External Humeral Epicondylitis)

When the forearm muscles were used repeatedly, it will cause excessive strain around the elbow with inflammation. Tennis elbow is common among tennis players, but a lot of patients nowadays have not gotten the condition from playing tennis. The high-risk groups of tennis elbow involve people who make excessive use of arm rotation, tap on objects repeatedly, carry heavy objects for long periods of time, etc.

Trigger Finger (Stenosing Flexor Tenosynovitis)

When the patients extend or bend their fingers, they will get stuck in a certain position and cause pain. Thus, it will affect patients’ daily living.
